THOUGH  IT  LASTED

JUST  A  WHILE

I saw it in the morning,
Such a marvel that I found

I saw it at the market
When I walked the road to town.

It showed itself so bravely
At the Monday morning brunch

And then it came around again
Today just after lunch.

I saw it at the Bakery
Behind the raisin bread

And then again it rested on
My sister's husband Fred !

In case that you are wondering
Just what it is I mean,

I'm talkin' 'bout the pleasures of
The ones that I have seen !

I saw it melt a hardened heart
And stop an angry word,

It soothed the hurting feelings
From an argument I heard.

It helped an aged woman
Who was ailing from the gout

It eased the way for someone
Who was feeling down and out.

It got my friend the postman
As he brought the morning mail,

I found it 'round the corner
At the new Spring bargain sale !

There nearly was a riot
When it just attacked a man

Who helped a lady crossing
As he lent a helping hand !

It was a chain reaction
As it spread among a crowd

And even on a pessimist-
I heard him laugh out loud !

A child of ten with braces
On her little mouth she wore,

She had it at the counter
At the local hardware store.

It never even startled me
It wasn't a surprise,

To see that it had rested there
'Neath someone's tear-filled eyes !

This joyful little pleasure
Though it lasted just a while,

It fell upon some faces,
For you see it is a  S-M-I-L-E !
