" HUSH-A-BY
MY DARLIN' "
When
asked upon my birthday
What
I wanted for a gift
When
I was turning 'forty'
I
replied, "A little lift ".
Then
later on the question
As
I turned to 'forty-five'
I
jokingly did answer
'
I'm just glad to be alive ! '
But
as the years were passing
On
my day of 'fifty-two'
I
realized one morning
Just
what menopause could do !
I
thought that I was aging
Rather
gracefully at that,
At
'sixty' I discovered
I
had pounds of stored-up fat.
At
sixty-one I noticed
That
my knees had wrinkles too !
My
stomach thrice had folded
As
I bent to tie my shoe.
It
happened on my birthday
'Twas
my day of 'sixty-three'
Saw
'dimples' in the mirror
Age
was looking back at me.
I
nearly burst in laughter
On
my birthday - 'sixty-eight'
I
couldn't find my chin
And
I had lost my dental plate.
I
wish you could have seen
The
way I looked at 'sixty-nine'
My
eyes had lost their color
And
I think I'm going blind.
At
'seventy' I wobble
Yet
I'm feeling pretty good
My
bones are mighty feeble
-
Just don't bend the way they should.
The
day that I turned 'eighty'
In
a sentimental way -
I
thought about my younger years
That
flew by yesterday.
Alas!
another birthday
Yes
it's true, I'm 'eighty-three' !
My
brain is working slowly
And
the wrinkles cover me.
Now
here I am at 'ninety'
And
my memory has gone
Except
for a reminder
Of
a long ago sweet song........
" Hush-a-by
now darlin',
Don't
you shed a tear today
The
butterflies are dancing,
I've
a tune for you to play. "
" I
picked for you some flowers,
Hear
the birds' sweet melody ?
The
sun is bright and shiny
Please
come out and dance with me. "
" The
willow tho' is weeping,
I
shant e're to let you cry,
I
love you dear forever
And
I will until I die. "
" Hush-a-by
now darlin',
I've
a song for you to sing
Please
marry me tomorrow
For
'tis joy that life shall bring......."
Then
on the eve my birthday,
I
had turned to 'ninety-five'
When
glancing in the mirror
Just
a smile - I'm still alive.
If
only those still young
Could
understand, the years do fly
It
happens on the 'morrow
As
you blink, they flutter by.
Today
I'm 'ninety-seven'
Don't
know what each day shall bring......
But
" Hush-a-by my darlin',
I've
a song for you to sing. "
